From an activity based on a causerie with Prof. Dr. Soner Yildirim on "Design Principles for Online Learning":
1. What does learning mean?
Learning is the development of an individual's abilities, attitude and knowledge in a certain period of time achieved through repetitive communication between various chemical neural transmitters.
2. How does learning occur?
When the student is repetitively exposed to the knowledge on a regular basis, the learning occurs.
3. Why do we do lesson design?
In order to be more systematic and regular. Following or having a plan provides stability and productivity and makes it easier to follow what we're doing.
4. What are the 3 parts of the brain that are localised for learning?
Hippocampus
Amygdala
Nucleus Accumbens
5. How long is the most effective educational video for University students?
10 or 15 minutes
6. What are the most remembered parts of a lesson?
First and last 15 minutes + visuals are often the most remembered parts of a lesson.
The shorter a lecture is, the better. To maintain students' attention, it is better to start a 1,5 hours class with a 15 minutes long intro. After an introduction, it is better to have them make an activity based on using some of their 5 senses that are helpful in terms of learning. This way, they won't get bored because they will be busy doing something. After the activity, you can sum up what you intended to teach and finish.
