Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning
Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML) is basically a theory of the usage of technology in creating materials. It has been studied and popularized by Richard E. Mayer. Multimedia learning is based on the integration of what eyes see and ears hear. It makes use of visual aid and audio. Basically words or pictures are taken by our eyes and ears which makes sensory memory. After these are organized into verbal and pictoral modes, the final result gets integrated into our prior knowledge. This Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning is based on three assumptions. One of these assumptions supports that we have two separate channels to process knowledge which are auditory and visual channels. According to the other assumption, each of these channels have limited capacity to process knowledge. And finally, the last one says that learning does not occur passively, it requires active integration of knowledge.
